Treatment of Acute pain
Patient
controlled Analgesia with Morphine
  • Advantages
    • Allow patient to take an active role in the care
    • Less dependent on nurses to deliver the next dose
  • Use of Meripidine is discouraged due to potential accumulation of active metabolites that can cause seizure
  • Start with 1 - 2 mg q 15 min prn, up to 12 mg /hr
  • Provide MS Contin 1 hour before stopping the pump
  • Patient education & necessary precautions
Ketorolac (Toradol)
  • 30-60 mg IM, then 15-30 mg q6h, followed by oral dose 10 mg q6-8h
  • Less effective than Opiod
